According to the founder of Wikipedia Jimmy Wales, the project is a non-profit online encyclopedia, so the probability of ICO and the release of its own cryptocurrency is excluded.
Wales recently performed at an event dedicated to blockchain technology in Berlin. In a subsequent interview to the online publication Business Insider, he said that the cryptocurrency market is of no interest to his company.
About the same Wales said a few years ago. In particular, he called ICO "absolute fraud," which does not imply any benefits for investors. Wales responded negatively and the blockchain at his speech in Berlin. He noted that this is a very interesting technology, which is a clear bubble with artificially created excitement.
Thus the only source of income Wikipedia will continue to remain voluntary donations. It is noteworthy that Jimmy Wales is not against contributions carried out in Bitcoin: "Wikipedia" accepts the digital currency in 2014.
Even more interesting is that for the first week after adding the function of donation in cryptocurrency, the online encyclopedia has received 237 BTC or 140 thousand euros at the time. If users donated BTC now, then Wikipedia would have received about $ 1.8 million.
