Chinese search engine and web services company Baidu has launched its Baidu Blockchain Engine (BBE), an operating system designed to facilitate decentralized application (DApp) development. This was announced by Baidu’s cloud computing unit, Baidu Cloud, on Feb. 14.
Baidu Cloud said that an open source, commercialized platform is the only way to build a blockchain operating system. It is reported that BBE was established on the basis of technological strategy called ABC, which includes artificial intelligence, big data and cloud computing. The main purpose of the Baidu Blockchain Engine is to make DApp development as simple as creating a mobile app.
Baidu Cloud hoped that the commercial development of the blockchain technology will have a positive impact not only on the BBE based on intelligent cloud platform, but also on a wider range of blockchain-based products. The platform is designed to address the perceived shortcomings of currently available infrastructure, which purportedly encounters issues with inefficient single-machine storage, high data storage costs and, subsequently, computing bottlenecks.
Baidu Cloud notes that the BBE gives developers access to services such as multichain and middle-tier frameworks, smart contracts and patterns of decentralized applications. The operating system also incorporated various mechanisms to ensure data security and privacy protection.
Baidu Blockchain Engine has compatibility with the Baidu private cloud, allowing customers to implement decentralized applications in different business scenarios by means of a flexible blockchain-as-a-service platform (BaaS).
Also it is reported that Baidu Blockchain Lab developed BBE with six functions in mind, providing reliable computing environment, high performance and high throughput performance, storage scalability, cross-chain trusted interactions, support for smart contracts and a security audit of contracts.
In September last year, Baidu has released a guide called Baidu Blockchain White Paper V1.0, which outlines the design of its “Super Chain” network system. This system, which forms is part of a Baidu project for the commercialization of cloud blockchain platform BaaS, is a stereo network that supports parallel sidechains.
